What is Big Mac Salad?
As the name suggests, this Big Mac salad is my riff on the traditional McDonald's stack burger. The burger is so well-known that a song has been written about its toppings.
However, for this keto Big Mac salad, we are maintaining only the meat, cheese, and vegetables and removing all three layers of the sandwich.
Additionally, utilizing a salad dressing that remarkably resembles the renown "special sauce."
Why You'll Love This!
- When you are trying to eat low-carb or maintain a ketogenic diet, salads are always a fantastic option for lunch and dinner.
- This hearty keto Big Mac salad is loaded with vegetables, protein, and healthy fats. Long after you've finished your bowl, this combo will still make you feel full.
- The flavor you know and love is created by the combination of onions, pickles, and thousand island dressing.
Ingredients for Big Mac in a Bowl
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 4+ Dill pickles, sliced
- ½ cup minced onion
- 1 head Iceberg lettuce
- ½ teaspoon Sesame seeds
- ½ cup mayo
- 2 tablespoon low carb pickle relish (or chopped pickle with juice)
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- ½ teaspoon yellow mustard
- ¼ tsp+ monk fruit (increase if using chopped pickle for the relish)
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
Step by Step Instructions
Prepare the Beef
A big skillet should be heated over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil added. Add the garlic clove, salt, and pepper to the ground meat. It will take the ground beef around 6-7 minutes to cook and stir until the middle is no longer pink. Let some of the grease drain.
While preparing the remaining low-carb ingredients for the Big Mac salad, set aside and allow to cool.
Prepare the salad's components.
Slice the pickles, mince the onion, grate the cheese, and chop the iceberg lettuce to prepare the remaining salad elements. Place aside.
Produce the sauce
Add the mayo, pickle relish, ketchup, yellow mustard, sugar, garlic salt, and onion powder to a small bowl to make the Big Mac sauce.
Combine
For four bowls, or as many low-carb Big Mac salad bowls you're making, place the lettuce on the bottom. Depending on how hungry you are, this dish might only make 2 servings.
On top of the lettuce, scatter the hamburger meat. The pickles, onion, and shredded cheese will then be added. Instead of scattering the toppings over the top of your salads, you may combine them all in one bowl. That approach serving creates a better presentation.
Serve the dressing on the side or generously drizzle Big Mac sauce over the salad. The salad's flavor is greatly enhanced by the tasty toppings and sauce. You can add as much cheese, pickles, and onions as you like. If desired, season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!
Big Mac Bowl Recipe Tips
- If you want flavorful ground beef, choose 80/20 sirloin! Ground beef that is nearly fat-free simply does not have the same flavor.
- Your meat will have a ton of flavor when you cook it in 1 tablespoon of oil. I know it looks strange, but it's true.
- Although a Big Mac typically just has lettuce and pickles, you free to add other vegetables, such as tomatoes, to your preference.
- As an alternative to lettuce in your Big Mac salad, try substituting cabbage or broccoli slaw.
- Use French dressing or Thousand Island salad dressing as a last resort.
